Gynaecomastia surgery is a cosmetic treatment to reduce the size of the male breasts.
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue in males increases to a point that can become problematic, both physically and psychologically. The unwanted tissue may be breast glandular tissue, adipose (fatty) in nature, or a combination of the two. The result of this can be functionally and psychologically harmful to the individual. The physical deformation may also be extremely painful if the glandular tissue is more prominent. As for psychological impact, the insecurities this condition can bring are often the reason why males who suffer from it often seek medical attention.
Most patients have never heard of this condition until their doctor identifies it. The GP may also be unaware of the possible causes of the condition and its psychological impact. After the initial presentation, boys are frequently advised to ignore the gynecomastia and are told that it will go away. Fortunately, in most instances, cases of minimal subareolar pubertal-onset gynecomastia do regress as puberty progresses.
